Why Clicked exists

Reading is the foundation of everything we do — but understanding what we read is a different challenge entirely. Whether you're a student tackling dense textbooks, a professional navigating technical documents, a researcher working across multiple languages, or someone simply curious about the world — the moment you hit a word or concept you don't fully grasp, your reading flow stops.

Clicked was built to fix that. Highlight any text on any webpage and get an instant AI-powered explanation — at exactly the depth you need, in 15+ languages, without ever leaving the page. No new tabs. No searching. No losing your place.

💡 About Clicked

What is Clicked?

Clicked is an AI-powered reading assistant and text explainer built as a Chrome browser extension. It lets you highlight any word, phrase, or sentence on any webpage and instantly get a clear, contextual explanation — right where you're reading, without opening a new tab or leaving the page.

Clicked is an indie software project developed and maintained by a single developer at Bluebonnet Software LLC in Houston, Texas. It was built out of a genuine frustration with how hard it can be to understand complex content while reading online — and a belief that understanding should be instant, not a 5-tab research session.

What makes Clicked different:

  • Three depth levels — Overview for a quick summary, Detail for a thorough breakdown, Analogy for a real-world comparison that makes it click
  • 15+ languages — explanations in your language, even if the source text is in a different one
  • Read aloud — tap any card to hear the explanation spoken in your active language
  • Stays on the page — no new tabs, no losing your place, no context switching
  • Privacy-first — only the exact text you select is ever processed. Nothing else.
Who is Clicked for?

Clicked was built for anyone who reads online and occasionally hits something they don't fully understand. In practice, our users tend to be:

  • Students — understanding lectures, research papers, and textbook content without losing their flow
  • Language learners — reading content in their target language and switching explanations between languages instantly
  • Professionals — making sense of technical documents, legal language, financial reports, and industry jargon
  • Researchers — working across domains where unfamiliar terminology is the norm
  • Curious people — who simply want to understand things better, faster, without leaving what they're reading

You can configure Clicked to match your background by selecting a persona — General, Student, Professional, or Expert — which calibrates how explanations are written for you.

Who built Clicked?

Clicked is built and maintained by a single independent developer operating as Bluebonnet Software LLC, based in Houston, Texas. It is a passion project — not a venture-backed startup, not a large team.

As a solo project, our support response times and service guarantees are more limited than those of larger software companies. We are committed to providing the best possible experience within those constraints.

🚀 Getting Started

How do I install Clicked?

Clicked is currently available for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Visit tryclicked.app and click the install button to go to the store listing for your browser, then click Add to Chrome or Add to Edge. The extension installs in seconds. You can also find the extension directly on the respective web store and download it from there. The extension may be made available for other browsers in the future.

Once installed, the welcome screen opens automatically and walks you through setup — choosing your persona, your second language, and creating your account.

How do I sign up?

When you first install Clicked, the welcome screen opens automatically. Go through these steps:

  • Step 1: Choose your persona — General, Student, Professional, or Expert
  • Step 2: Choose your second language (for bilingual explanations)
  • Step 3: Enter your email address and choose a password, then click Create account

You'll receive a verification email at the address you provided. Click the link in that email to verify your account — this also automatically signs you in.

💡 Don't see the verification email? Check your spam folder.
What happens after I verify my email?

Clicking the verification link takes you to tryclicked.app/verified. The page automatically signs you in — no further action needed. Your 7-day free trial starts immediately.

You'll also receive a confirmation email with instructions for accessing Clicked in the future. The extension is now ready to use on any webpage.

✅ You're signed in and ready. Go to any webpage, highlight any text, and your first explanation appears.
How do I use Clicked?

Using Clicked is as simple as selecting text:

  • 1. Go to any webpage — news, Wikipedia, research papers, legal documents, anything
  • 2. Highlight any text — a word, a phrase, or a full sentence
  • 3. The explanation popup appears — instantly, right where you selected
  • 4. Choose your depth — click Dig deeper → at the bottom of each card to go from Overview to Detail to Analogy
  • 5. Switch languages — tap EN or SP (your second language) to see the explanation in either language
  • 6. Listen — tap 🔊 on any card to hear it read aloud
  • 7. Save — tap 🔖 to save any explanation to your library
💡 Don't want an explanation? Hold Shift while selecting — the popup won't appear. Correct sequence: (Click → Shift → Select). You can also resize the popup by dragging its corner to fit your reading flow.

Watch the full interactive walkthrough on our homepage to see every feature in action.

Built for how real people read

Every feature in Clicked was designed around one question: what does a reader actually need in the moment? Not a dictionary definition. Not a Wikipedia article. A clear, contextual explanation at exactly the right depth — in their language, on their screen, right now.

From three-depth explanations to bilingual mode to read-aloud support to domain blocking — every feature is there because readers asked for it.

Features

What are the three depth levels?

Every explanation in Clicked has three levels you can explore in sequence:

  • Overview (●○○) — a clear 2-3 sentence summary. The fastest way to understand something without getting into the weeds.
  • Detail (●●○) — a thorough breakdown with context, causes, and implications. For when you need to truly understand something, not just recognize it.
  • Analogy (●●●) — a real-world comparison that makes abstract concepts concrete. Often the one that actually makes something click.

Click Dig deeper → at the bottom of each card to move to the next level. If an analogy doesn't resonate, tap ↺ New analogy for a fresh one — as many times as you like.

You can also pin a level using the pills at the top of the popup — double-click any pill to lock future explanations at that depth. Double-click again to unpin.

You can also pin a level using the pills at the top of the popup so future explanations always open at your preferred depth.

How does the language feature work?

Clicked supports 15+ languages for explanations — and works with source text written in any language too.

Switching explanation language: Two language buttons sit in every popup — EN and your chosen second language. Tap either to regenerate the explanation in that language instantly.

Reading content in another language: You don't need to be reading in English for Clicked to work. Select text written in Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, French, Spanish — Clicked understands the source language and explains it in whichever language you choose. This makes it especially powerful for language learners reading native content.

Supported languages include: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Swedish — and more.

To change your default second language, go to Settings → Second Language and choose from the dropdown.

What is the audio read-aloud feature?

Every explanation card has a 🔊 speaker button. Tap it to hear the explanation read aloud in whichever language is currently active. Tap again to stop.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Language learners who want to hear correct pronunciation alongside the explanation
  • Users who prefer audio reinforcement when learning new concepts
  • Anyone who finds it easier to absorb information by listening rather than reading

Audio works across all 15+ supported languages.

How do I save explanations to my library?

Tap the 🔖 bookmark button on any card to save that explanation to your personal library. Your library stores the explanation text, the depth level, the language, the source URL, and the date saved.

To access your library, click the extension icon in your toolbar and go to Library. You can search through saved explanations and click any source URL to return to the original page.

Library data is stored locally in your browser — it stays on your device and is never sent to our servers.

You can enable or disable the library feature in Settings → Library.

What are personas and how do I change mine?

Personas tell Clicked how to calibrate explanations for your background. There are four options:

  • General — accessible explanations suitable for anyone. Good default for most users.
  • Student — explanations framed for learning, with academic context where helpful.
  • Professional — explanations that assume domain familiarity and focus on practical implications.
  • Expert — concise, technical explanations that don't over-explain fundamentals.

To change your persona: click the extension icon → SettingsBackground → select your persona → Save.

You can change this as often as you like — it takes effect on the next explanation.

How do I set or change my second language?

Your second language is the language that appears alongside English in the popup's language toggle buttons. It lets you switch any explanation between English and your chosen language with one tap.

To set or change it: click the extension icon → SettingsSecond Language → choose from the dropdown → Save.

The change takes effect on the next explanation you generate. You can change it as often as you like.

You can always switch to any supported language directly in the popup — the second language setting just determines which language the SP button shows by default.
What is the Shift+select feature?

Sometimes you want to select text on a webpage without triggering a Clicked explanation — to copy something, to highlight for reference, or just to read normally.

Hold Shift while selecting text and Clicked will not activate. The popup won't appear. Your selection works normally. Correct sequence: (Click → Shift → Select).

This is also shown as a permanent reminder at the bottom of every Clicked popup: "Don't want an explanation? Hold Shift while selecting."

How do I pause Clicked?

You can pause Clicked for a set period directly from inside the popup — no need to go to settings or the toolbar.

Inside any explanation popup, there is a Pause option with a dropdown letting you choose how long: 1 day, 1 hour, 2 hours, all the way up to 12 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, or 5 days.

When paused, a toast notification appears: "Clicked paused. [Undo]?" — visible for a few seconds so you can reverse it immediately if you paused by accident.

The extension icon in your toolbar shows a 🔴 red indicator when paused. Click the extension icon to see the status and resume early at any time.

Clicked resumes automatically after the selected period — no action needed.

How do I block Clicked on specific websites?

Clicked includes a blocked domains feature that prevents the extension from activating on websites you specify. This is especially useful for banking sites, email, brokerage accounts, medical portals, or any site where you don't want the popup to appear.

Pre-blocked by default: mail.google.com, chase.com, bankofamerica.com, wellsfargo.com, fidelity.com, schwab.com, robinhood.com, mychart.org

To add or remove domains: click the extension icon → SettingsBlocked Domains → type the domain (e.g. mybank.com) → click Add. To remove a domain, click the ✕ next to it.

Entering a domain blocks all pages on that site. For example, entering bankofamerica.com blocks all bankofamerica.com pages.

On blocked domains, Clicked does not activate at all — no text is selected, processed, or sent anywhere.
Can I resize the popup or pin a depth level?

Resizing: Yes — drag the corner of the popup to make it larger or smaller. Your preferred size is remembered for future explanations.

Pinning a depth level: Double-click any of the three pills at the top of the popup (●○○ Overview, ●●○ Detail, ●●● Analogy) to pin that level. Future explanations will always open at your pinned depth. Double-click the same pill again to unpin and return to the default flow.

💡 Pinning is great if you always want the Analogy first, or if you only ever need the Overview level for quick reading.
Can I stop Clicked from triggering on short selections?

Yes — you can set a minimum number of characters that must be selected before Clicked activates. This prevents the popup from appearing when you accidentally select a single letter or a very short word while navigating a page.

The default is 4 characters. To change it: click the extension icon → SettingsTrigger sensitivity → choose your preferred minimum from the dropdown (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, or 20 characters).

💡 If Clicked is triggering too often while you browse, try increasing this to 5 or 10 characters. If you want it to activate on very short selections like "AI" or "GDP", set it to 1 or 2.
How do I enable or disable Clicked?

There are two ways to toggle Clicked on or off:

  • From the toolbar: Click the puzzle piece 🧩 icon → click Clicked → the popup shows your current status with a toggle to enable or disable
  • From inside a popup: Use the Pause dropdown to pause for a set period (see above)

When disabled, the extension icon shows a grey/off state. No explanations will appear until you re-enable it.

Privacy is not an afterthought

Only the exact text you highlight is ever processed — nothing else on the page is seen, read, or transmitted. We don't track what you read. We don't store your browsing history. We don't log which words you look up. Your reading habits are yours.

By default, Clicked is pre-blocked on mail.google.com, chase.com, bankofamerica.com, wellsfargo.com, fidelity.com, schwab.com, robinhood.com, and mychart.org — it will not activate on these sites at all. You can remove any of these, or add your own domains, anytime from Settings.

🔒 Privacy & Security

What are blocked domains and how do I manage them?

Clicked includes a blocked domains feature that prevents the extension from activating on websites you specify. On blocked sites, Clicked does not activate at all — no text is selected, processed, or sent anywhere.

Pre-blocked by default: mail.google.com, chase.com, bankofamerica.com, wellsfargo.com, fidelity.com, schwab.com, robinhood.com, mychart.org

To add or remove domains: click the extension icon → SettingsBlocked Domains → type the domain (e.g. mybank.com) → click Add. To remove a domain, click the ✕ next to it. You can add or remove any domain at any time, including the pre-blocked defaults.

Entering a domain blocks all pages on that site. For example, entering bankofamerica.com blocks all bankofamerica.com pages.
What text does Clicked read?

Only the exact text you highlight. Clicked does not scan pages in the background, does not read page content automatically, and does not access anything beyond the specific words you select.

The moment you release your mouse after selecting text, only those words are sent to the AI provider to generate an explanation. Nothing else on the page is ever seen or processed by Clicked.

Do you store what I read?

No. The text you select is sent directly to the AI provider (Google Gemini for subscription users, or your chosen provider for annual license users) and is not stored by us at any point.

We do not log which words you look up, which pages you visit, or how you use Clicked on any given webpage. The only data we store is your account information (email, plan type, usage count) needed to operate the service.

Your library entries — if you choose to save explanations — are stored locally in your browser on your own device. They are never sent to our servers.

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

Is my data safe?

Clicked uses industry-standard third-party infrastructure providers — Supabase for database and authentication, Stripe for payments, Railway for backend hosting. Each provider maintains their own security standards.

We use HTTPS for all connections, hashed password storage via Supabase Auth, and access controls limiting who can access our database.

As an independent project, we acknowledge our security implementation is more limited than that of larger software companies and we are committed to continuous improvement.

For full details on all services we use and their security practices, see our Privacy Policy.

What AI provider does Clicked use?

For subscription users ($5/month), Clicked currently uses Google Gemini to generate explanations. The AI provider and model may change at any time — we will always aim to use the best available model. Your selected text is sent to the provider and governed by their privacy policy.

For annual license users ($20), you plug in your own API key from your choice of provider — Google Gemini, OpenAI, or Anthropic. Your key is stored only in your browser and is never transmitted to us.

Existing subscribers are notified before any price changes take effect, and changes will not apply until the start of a new billing cycle. You may cancel at any time before a price change takes effect. See our Terms of Service for full pricing terms.
What are bundle credits?

Bundle credits are additional Explanation credits you can purchase if you run low on your monthly allocation. They appear in the app when available.

Bundle credit pricing is set at the time of purchase and may change. Bundle credits expire 3 months from the purchase date and are non-refundable except where core functionality has been unavailable for more than 30 consecutive days within the validity period.

How does the referral program work?

Users with an active paid subscription may share a referral link to invite new users to Clicked.

Eligibility — referred user (B): Referral credits for the referred user are available only to users who have never previously held a Clicked account. Returning users — including those who previously deleted a Clicked account — are not eligible to receive referred-user credits. There is no such restriction on the referring user (A), who may refer new users regardless of how long they have been a Clicked subscriber.

How credits are earned:

  • Referring user (A) receives 100 Referral Credits after the user they referred (B) completes 30 days of a paid subscription.
  • Referred user (B) receives 100 Referral Credits after they themselves complete 30 days of a paid subscription.

The 30-day requirement applies to both users and exists to protect against refunds, failed payments, and abuse. Credits are not awarded if a subscription is cancelled, refunded, or lapses within the first 30 days.

Using Referral Credits: Referral Credits can only be used while the holder has an active paid monthly subscription. If a subscription lapses or is cancelled, any unused Referral Credits are frozen and cannot be used until the subscription is reinstated. Referral Credits expire 90 days from the date they are awarded and cannot be reinstated after expiry.

Credit amounts are displayed in the app and may be changed at our discretion, including being discontinued entirely, for new referrals at any time. Existing awarded credits are not affected by such changes.

Anti-gaming: Self-referral, fraudulent referrals, creating multiple accounts to generate referral credits, and any other abuse of the referral system will result in forfeiture of all Referral Credits and may result in account termination.
How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription at any time from the Settings page in the extension: click the extension icon → SettingsPlanManage / Cancel. This opens the Stripe customer portal where you can cancel with one click.

To take effect for the current billing cycle, cancellation must be made at least 3 days before your renewal date. No partial month refunds are issued. You retain access until the end of the period you've paid for.

Can I get a refund?

Monthly subscription: No partial month refunds are issued. You may cancel at any time and retain access until the end of the paid period.

Annual license ($20): Refunds are available within 30 days of purchase if core functionality has been continuously unavailable, prorated based on remaining full calendar months of the license period.

Support the Developer payments: These are entirely voluntary and non-refundable under all circumstances.

For full refund terms, see our Terms of Service.

Why does my payment email need to match my account email?

When you make a payment through Stripe, we use the email address on the payment to identify your account and activate your plan. It is important that you use the same email address for your Clicked account and for any payment you make.

If you use a different email for payment, we will not be able to link the payment to your account and your plan will not be upgraded automatically. If this happens, contact support@tryclicked.app — we will try to resolve it manually but cannot guarantee it.

💡 To make this easier, Clicked pre-fills your account email in the payment form automatically when you click an upgrade button from within the extension.
Your account, your control

Stay signed in across sessions. Change your plan anytime. Reset your password in seconds. Your Clicked account gives you full control over your subscription, preferences, and data — all from the Settings page inside the extension.

How do I delete my account?

To request account deletion, email privacy@tryclicked.app from your registered email address with the subject "Account deletion request." We will make reasonable efforts to action your request as promptly as possible.

Please note that some data — such as Stripe payment records — is retained by our payment processor for financial compliance reasons and cannot be deleted. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Email hash retention: Upon account deletion, all personal data is removed from our systems. We retain a one-way cryptographic hash of your email address indefinitely after deletion. This hash is mathematically irreversible and cannot be used to identify you or recover your email address. It is retained solely to prevent fraudulent re-registration for a new free trial.
