An API, or application programming interface, is a defined contract specifying the requests a software system accepts and the responses it returns, enabling interoperation without exposure of internal implementation. This decoupling permits independent evolution of provider and consumer, subject to versioning discipline, and provides the boundary at which authentication, authorization and rate limiting are enforced.
