Open-Source vs Closed-Source AI Models: What's the Difference?

An open-source AI model is one anyone can download, run on their own computers, and modify, usually free. A closed-source model stays inside the company that built it; you reach it only through their paid service, on their rules. The choice decides who controls the model, where your data goes, and what it costs at scale.

Open usually means the model's weights, the billions of tuned numbers that are the model, get published for download. Running it on your own servers means your data never leaves the building, which is exactly why hospitals and banks care. You can also modify it freely, most often by fine-tuning it into a specialist, and there is no per-request bill, just your hardware. Closed models flip all three: the strongest frontier systems are mostly closed, reachable only through the maker's paid interface. That buys top capability with no infrastructure to run, but every request is metered, your data makes a round trip through their servers, and the vendor can change prices under you. One wrinkle: most open models are open-weights rather than fully open, since the training data and recipe usually stay secret, and some licenses restrict commercial use. The usual split: closed to start fast at the frontier, open for control, privacy, and cost once volume grows.

Owning a car versus using a ride service. The owned car costs you upfront and you maintain it yourself, but it is yours: modify it, drive anywhere, no meter running, nobody logging where you went. The ride service hands you a newer, nicer car instantly with zero maintenance, but you pay per trip, ride by their rules, and every journey lands in their records. Neither is simply better; it depends whether you value polish and convenience or control, privacy, and a flat cost.
