Formal definition — The same term, explained the usual way

Support and resistance denote price zones at which historical demand or supply has repeatedly halted declines or advances, attributable to clustered resting orders, anchoring at prior transaction prices, and reflexive participant behavior. Analytical significance increases with the number of prior tests and accompanying volume. Penetration of such zones, particularly on elevated volume, is interpreted as a material shift in supply-demand balance, with breached levels frequently assuming the opposite role upon retest.
