What is Torque?

Torque is twisting force — what it takes to rotate something around a pivot. It equals the force applied times the distance from the pivot: same push, farther out, more torque. That's why door handles sit on the far edge, away from the hinges.

Torque = force × distance from the pivot, and both factors count equally, so doubling the push doubles the torque and pushing twice as far out doubles it too, which is why a longer wrench turns a bolt a shorter one can't. One condition: only the part of the force pointing across the arm creates rotation, so pushing straight along a wrench toward the bolt produces zero torque. Balance works by comparing torques, since on a see-saw each side contributes force × distance, so a 40-pound child sitting far out balances an 80-pound child at half the distance. When the torques on an object cancel, it doesn't rotate, and engineers call this rotational equilibrium, using it to check that shelves, cranes and beams won't tip. The unit is the newton-meter: force times distance, literally.

A mechanic meets a rusted bolt her wrench can't move, so instead of pushing harder she slides a meter of steel pipe over the handle and pushes from the end — same muscles, but the force acts three times farther from the bolt, so it twists three times harder, and the bolt gives. Mechanics call the pipe a cheater bar, which is unfair. It isn't cheating; it's the formula.
