What is Standard Deviation?

Standard deviation measures how spread out numbers are around their average. A small one means most values sit close to the average, and a large one means they are scattered widely. Two data sets can share an identical average and describe completely different situations, and this is the number that separates them.

It is built in four steps: measure each value's distance from the average, square those distances, average the squares, then take the square root to return to the original units. Squaring removes the minus signs and gives distant values far more weight than near ones. Because the final number carries the same units as the data — points, dollars, minutes — it can be read directly. Two classes averaging 70 on an exam show what that means: a standard deviation of 3 puts nearly everyone between 64 and 76, while a deviation of 20 puts 40s and 95s in the same room. For data with the usual bell shape, about 68% of values fall within one standard deviation of the average, 95% within two, and 99.7% within three, which is why a value three deviations out is treated as genuinely rare. One caution: because distances are squared, a single extreme outlier can inflate the entire figure.

Two jobs both pay $5,000 a month on average, but one is a fixed salary and the other is commission swinging between $1,500 and $9,000. Rent gets paid out of the bad month, not the average, so the commission job quietly demands a cash buffer the salaried job never asks for. That buffer is what a large standard deviation actually costs.
